The article is devoted to the study of the risks and opportunities of integrating Akademgorodok, the largest regional scientific center of the USSR, into the structure of Novosibirsk in the context of the modernization processes of the late Soviet era. The article analyzes the unique Soviet experiment of creating an autonomous scientific cluster in the body of an industrial metropolis and its consequences for the transformation of the urban environment. The purpose of the study is to reconstruct the mechanisms of territorial, demographic, functional and socio-cultural interaction between the City and the Town, as well as to assess the influence of the scientific community on the development of Novosibirsk. Particular attention is paid to the issues of migration of the scientific elite, the formation of new professional and social structures, architectural and planning innovations and the formation of a self-sufficient intellectual environment. The article reveals identity conflicts and spatial faults that arose as a result of the administrative unification of Akademgorodok with the proletarian districts of the metropolis, which influenced the symbolic and cultural perception of the urban environment. The problems of transport connectivity, supply, socio-cultural isolation and ambiguous reception of the scientific community by Novosibirsk residents are analyzed. Particular importance is attached to the influence of Akademgorodok on changing the image of Novosibirsk, which has become one of the leading scientific and educational centers of the country. Institutional, ideological and political conditions for the functioning of the scientific cluster within the centralized state system are considered. The article emphasizes the relevance of the topic for historical urban studies, sociology of science and territorial planning, and sets the task of further interdisciplinary understanding of the experience of spatial integration of science and the city in the context of a planned economy.
